As you may already know, our vertebral discs are vital to our health. A damaged spinal cord or degenerative disc can cause major health consequences. Cannabidiol, or CBD, has been found to effectively treat several spinal conditions ranging from back pain to degenerative disc conditions.
Very Important Vertebrae
Our spine is made of 33 vertebrae that are responsible for sending brain signals to the different parts of our body. Therefore, if any of the discs get damaged, they majorly affect the person. Vertebrae are very important, seeing that they’re the building blocks of the body. They are cushioned with intervertebral discs that absorb shock. These discs need to remain healthy and intact in order to protect the spinal cord.
While nothing may abruptly and unexpectedly happen to your intervertebral discs, they do degenerate with age. This degeneration leads to pain and a higher probability of spinal cord diseases like Spinal Stenosis, Spinal Osteoarthritis, Spondylolisthesis and more. These conditions can cause frequent muscle spasms in the neck and back, and pain in the areas those discs connect to. Ultimately, the back pain you may be treating with pain relief cream can be something much more serious.
How does CBD Help?
In December 2014, PLoS conducted a study on rats with damaged intervertebral discs. The scientists divided the subjects into three groups, and treated them individually with different concentrations of CBD. After MRI analysis and controlled treatment, they observed that the groups who were treated with lower concentrations of CBD did not show any differences.
The batch treated with a higher concentration, however, showed significant improvements. Conclusively, these scientists were led to believe that CBD has the capacity to treat degenerative disc diseases. While the results with humans could vary, the possibilities of its benefits are clear.
